ENGIE exceeds 10 GW of storage capacity worldwide, driven by summer growth in BESS across Europe

As electricity systems increasingly rely on renewable energy, storage is becoming a critical enabler of the energy transition. Together, battery energy storage systems and pumped-storage hydropower help balance power systems by storing electricity when generation is abundant and making it available when demand increases. These solutions support the integration of renewable energy, enhance grid stability and resilience, and contribute to security of supply. 

A major step forward in Central Europe

ENGIE has established its first positions in the Polish storage segment and reinforced its presence in Romania through four selective investments. 

  • Poland: over the past two months, ENGIE has built a significant foothold in the country's battery market, with a portfolio of 758 MW and 2,156 MWh. Following the acquisition of the ready-to-build Tursko Wielkie asset (250 MW / 1,000 MWh) in Osiek (Staszów County), it advanced an adjacent 70 MW / 280 MWh development, enabling both sites to be integrated into a single 320 MW / 1,280 MWh facility. The pipeline has been further bolstered by a 438 MW / 876 MWh acquisition in the Łódź region. Scheduled for commissioning between 2028 and 2029, these projects benefit from direct connections to substations, optimizing energy flows and easing congestion on the regional network.

  • Romania: the Group has acquired a ready-to-build 54 MW / 216 MWh project in Călan (Hunedoara County, Transylvania). Expected to enter operation in 2029, it confirms ENGIE's continued growth in the country, where 85 MW / 170 MWh of storage capacity is already under construction. 

From development to delivery: a strong track record across the continent

Leveraging its global platform and local expertise, ENGIE has continued to expand its development portfolio, advance construction programs and reach new operational milestones across several key countries, demonstrating its ability to execute and deliver large-scale systems.

  • Spain: building on synergies with the Tarifa development (200 MW / 800 MWh) currently under way, the Group has acquired a 66 MW / 264 MWh asset in the same city, expected to enter operation in 2029. This acquisition strengthens ENGIE's portfolio of stand-alone and co-located storage systems. 

  • Belgium: construction has started on a new 74 MW / 296 MWh BESS at Coo, in the province of Liège. The system will reinforce the site's role as a major energy hub in Belgium, complementing the pumped-storage hydropower plant, solar installations and EV charging infrastructure. Commissioning is scheduled for early 2028. 

  • Portugal: two storage systems, each 10 MW / 45 MWh, are being built co-located with the Rallo and Mourisca wind farms, as part of a strategy to hybridize renewable assets. Both are expected to be commissioned in 2027. 

  • United Kingdom (Scotland): the Group brought online its first two BESS in the country, located in Cathkin (near East Kilbride) and Broxburn (west of Edinburgh), representing a combined capacity of 100 MW / 200 MWh. 

  • The Netherlands: on June 30th, ENGIE inaugurated BESS Maxima in Lelystad (35 MW / 100 MWh), its first and the largest battery storage system in operation in the country. Capable of supplying electricity for up to three hours during periods of peak demand, the asset complements a 32 MW solar farm and a 900 MW thermal power plant, turning the site into an integrated flexibility hub for the Dutch power system. 

A major milestone in ENGIE's flexibility strategy

With 10.7 GW of storage capacity in operation and under construction worldwide, including strong positions in Europe (4.7 GW) and the United States (4.4 GW), ENGIE confirms its role as a leading provider of flexibility solutions. This milestone reflects the Group's ability to develop, build and operate a diversified portfolio of storage assets, combining battery systems and pumped-storage hydropower, to support increasingly renewable-based power systems. This accelerated deployment contributes to the Group's ambition to develop a diversified portfolio of renewable and storage assets, reaching 95 GW by 2030.
