In Brazil, ENGIE Fully Commissions Serra do Assuruá, Its Largest Wind Complex Worldwide

ENGIE has officially reached full commercial operations at the Serra do Assuruá Wind Complex, located in Gentio do Ouro, Bahia, northeastern Brazil. The complex comprises 188 wind turbines across 24 wind farms, delivering a total installed capacity of 846 MW — the largest onshore wind development in ENGIE’s global portfolio and a flagship project for Latin America. The infrastructure also includes 28 kilometers of transmission lines, connecting the site to Brazil’s main electricity grid, ensuring reliable energy delivery nationwide.

The complex has gradually begun operating since August 2024, following authorization from ANEEL^[1] — Brazil’s national electricity regulatory agency — and supplies renewable power to the Free Energy Market, contractual framework that enables corporate consumers to acquire energy directly from producers and select their preferred source of generation, allowing them to secure renewable supply.
 

Driving Sustainable Development Rooted in Local Communities

During the construction phase, the Serra do Assuruá project generated approximately 3,000 direct and indirect jobs. ENGIE prioritized local hiring, through targeted recruitment and skills-matching initiatives. The company also supported the Bahia Qualification Program, offering 60 free training places — half reserved for women — in bricklaying, reinforced concrete structure erection, and carpentry. This 120-hour certified program targets low-income and socially vulnerable candidates, fostering employability and professional skills.

Guided by its corporate social responsibility strategy, ENGIE has also implemented several community projects in Gentio do Ouro and surrounding areas, focusing on social inclusion, environmental education, economic development, and infrastructure improvements. In collaboration with local communities, authorities and associations, the company has delivered tangible benefits such as community centers, public squares, and multi-sport facilities, improving quality of life for rural and quilombola populations.

Strengthening ENGIE’s Strategic Role in Brazil’s Energy Transition

ENGIE plays a key role in Brazil’s energy transition. The Group has been active in the country for nearly 30 years, operating across renewable generation, energy sales, transmission, gas transportation, and energy solutions.

In Brazil, ENGIE currently operates a total installed capacity of 15.7 GW, 100% renewable, including hydroelectric, onshore wind, and solar assets. The Group also manages 3,200 km of transmission lines and 22 substations in the country. ENGIE recently commissioned the first 334-kilometer section of the Asa Branca transmission network in Bahia, a strategic infrastructure that will extend over 1,000 kilometers in the states of Bahia, Minas Gerais, and Espírito Santo. In addition, ENGIE is implementing the Graúna Project, which involves the construction of 780 km of transmissions lines between Paraná and Santa Catarina, and approximately 660 kilometers from the Asa Branca project.
